WhatsBackUp Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 1, 2026
Who we are
WhatsBackUp is provided by De Waal Labs LTD. This policy explains how we handle personal data in connection with the WhatsBackUp app and related support communications.
Our approach
WhatsBackUp is designed to be local-first. Exported chat content is intended to stay on your device rather than being uploaded to a De Waal Labs cloud archive.
What data the app processes on your device
The app processes information contained in WhatsApp exports that you choose to import, including:
- chat names and participant names
- message content and timestamps
- bookmarks, archive state, and app organisation metadata
- media files included in an export, such as images, audio, and video
- privacy settings and accessibility settings you choose inside the app
This information is processed so the app can import, display, search, organise, and protect your archive on your device.
What we do not upload
WhatsBackUp is not designed as a cloud backup service. We do not provide an in-app De Waal Labs cloud archive for your imported chat history at this time, and we do not upload imported chat content or exported media files to our own servers.
Analytics, diagnostics, and purchases
The app currently uses third-party services for analytics, crash reporting, and in-app purchase management. These services may process limited technical and account-related data such as:
- app instance or device-related identifiers
- usage data and app interaction data
- crash logs, diagnostics, and performance information
- purchase status, entitlement status, and transaction-related identifiers
These functions are provided through Firebase Analytics, Firebase Crashlytics, RevenueCat, and the relevant app store billing provider.
Third-party services
- Google Firebase Analytics for app analytics
- Google Firebase Crashlytics for crash reporting and diagnostics
- RevenueCat for in-app purchase and entitlement management
- Apple App Store and Google Play for billing and purchase processing
Permissions and device access
Depending on platform and feature use, WhatsBackUp may request access to parts of your device needed to import, display, or handle exported attachments.
- photo library access for working with imported or exported media attachments
- file access needed to import ZIP exports you choose to open with the app
Support requests
If you contact support, we may receive the information you send us, including your email address, device details, screenshots, and any information you choose to share in order to help resolve your issue.
How data is used
- to import, display, search, and organise your local archive
- to keep the app stable and improve reliability
- to understand product usage and improve the app
- to manage purchases, entitlements, restores, and customer access to paid features
- to respond to support requests you send us
Data retention
Content imported into WhatsBackUp is intended to remain under your control on your device until you remove it. Support emails and related correspondence may be kept for as long as reasonably necessary to provide support, maintain records, and meet legitimate business obligations.
Analytics, diagnostics, and purchase-related data processed by third-party providers may be retained according to those providers’ own policies and account settings.
Your choices
You can choose what exports to import, what chats to keep, what chats to remove, and whether to use in-app privacy controls such as chat locking or hiding features.
Data sharing and sale
We do not sell imported chat content. We share data only where needed to provide analytics, diagnostics, purchases, billing, and support through the services described above.
Your rights
Depending on applicable law, you may have rights relating to access, correction, deletion, or restriction of personal data. If you want to raise a privacy question, contact us using the details below.
Children
WhatsBackUp is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly seek to collect personal data from children through the app.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date on this page.
